WATERMAN / Beach Water Quality Forecast / Lower Cheung Sha Beach / Beach Water Pollution Source

Lower Cheung Sha Beach

EPD's annual water quality ranking in 2014 Good
Primary pollution mode Rainfall - Streamflow driven
Major factor determining beach water quality Salinity, tide level

Although there are two freshwater sources that are drained into the beach, the water quality at the beach does not seem to be seriously affected, possibly because the wastewater from most of the residential areas in the hinterland is discharged after chlorination. However, salinity is still found to be a good indicator on beach pollution. Interestingly, Cheung Sha Lower, together with its neighbouring beach Cheung Sha Upper, are the only two beaches in Islands district that show a significant correlation between beach water quality and tide level.
