Fish Culture Zone Description
Yim Tin Tsai (YTT) Fish Culture Zone is located at the most inner part Tolo Harbour, the semi-closed estuary connecting Shing Mun and Tai Po Rivers to Mirs Bay. The area has weak tidal flushing and a long residence time for pollutants. The problem was amplified by the rapid urbanization and industrialization of Sha Tin and Tai Po in the 70s and 80s. A three-month long harmful algal bloom occurred in 1988 and caused a massive fish kill. After the commencement of Tolo Harbour Effluent Export Scheme (THEES) in 1995 and the Tai Po Master Sewage Treatment Works in 2002, the water quality in Tolo Harbour has been improved, and a decline in the number of red tides has been achieved.
