Southeastern Waters
The Southeastern Water includes Port Shelter, Rocky Harbour, Clear Water Bay and open water, with an area of 237.8 km2. Inner Port Shelter has numerous islands and bays which protect fish farming from wind and waves. There are 8 fish cultural zones (Kai Lung Wan, Kau Sai, Leung Shuen Wan, Ma Nam Wat, Po Toi O, Tai Tau Chau, Tiu Cham Wan and Tung Lung Chau), which is the highest number among all water zones in Hong Kong. Islands in outer Port Shelter are explorers and rock climbers’ paradise for the cliffs and sea caves formed by wave erosion.
The water and ecological environment is well maintained in this region. According to the Environment Protection Department (EPD), the annual mean dissolved oxygen and nutrients levels are compliant with the Water Quality Objective (WQO) most years for the period 1998-2007. From 1975 to 2008, 136 red tides were reported in Southeastern Waters, which accounts for 16% of the total number in Hong Kong for this period. AFCD has deployed artificial reefs in Kau Sai and Outer Port Shelter in 2001-2003 for attracting and supporting large population of fish. The Hong Kong Jockey Club has also established a number of measures to minimize the environmental impact from the extension of public golf course at Kau Sai Chau Island
